The Scotland Government-implemented Hate Crime bill was passed as a law this April, which has received mixed reactions from citizens of the country and people across the globe. While the law attempts to target misogyny at all levels in the country, a section of citizens feel that this law might curb the voices of the people and may impact the freedom of speech which has been the integral part of Scotland's democratic structure overall.

Amid this controversy, 'Harry Potter' author J.K. Rowling has been vocal about the impacts of the new hate crime law and has 'challenged' authorities to arrest her for her views on this law that, according to her opinion, was 'wide open to abuse', says a Guardian report.

Rowling has listed sex offenders who identified themselves as transgenders and described them as 'men, every last one of them.'

According to The Guardian's report, JK Rowling stated that the freedom of speech will hit rock bottom if the accurate description of biological sex is considered as 'criminal'.

However, according to the police authorities in Scotland, she will not be charged with a crime under the new Hate Crime law based on her reactions on social media. They claimed that her actions cannot be assessed to be criminal in nature, according to latest reports.

According to the law that came into implementation on 1 April, 2024, making derogatory comments on someone's age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, transgender identity will be deemed as a criminal offence and people committing this offence will be charged as per the law.
