Harris and Walz as ‘Dumb and Dumber’: Meta’s Oversight Board restores meme poking fun at Democratic presidential nominees after Facebook ban

Facebook recently reversed its previous ban on a meme which depicted US Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz as the famous characters from a film ‘Dumb and Dumber’ following a ruling from the Oversight Board of Meta. According to New York Post, Meta’s Oversight Board eventually reviewed the matter and ended up on a judgement that the meme was based on a recognizable satire of prominent US politicians while emphasizing the need to protect political speeches specifically during elections.

New York Post reported that the meme was taken down primarily during the August month for violating policies of Facebook which are against harassment and bullying specifically regarding the derogatory sexualized photoshop or drawings.

The Oversight Board of Meta expressed severe concerns that the strict enforcement of Meta regarding its policies could eventually result in excessive removal of political content while that could undermine criticism of government officials. Furthermore, a spokesperson of Meta also confirmed the reinstatement of the post acknowledging the fact that it was mistakenly removed, noted New York Post.

New York Post asserted that Meta’s Oversight Board actually aims to ensure fair application of policies and uphold the user rights to free speech especially in political contexts. The decision of Meta comes amidst an ongoing scrutiny of its content moderation practices while Mark Zuckerberg admitting Joe Biden’s administration had pressurized Facebook during the pandemic to suppress certain contents.
