The Hacks star took home her first Emmy on Sunday, September 14, winning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy for the hit HBO series. She ended her speech with a shout-out to her favorite NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles, before the live broadcast bleeped her comments.
How did Hannah Einbinder start his speech?
Einbinder opened on a lighter note, joking about her past Emmy losses, as quoted by the Independent. “I was just really committed to the personal narrative that I had that it was actually cooler to continue to lose,” she quipped. “But this is cool too! This is also punk rock.”
She went on to thank Hacks creators Jen Statsky, Paul W. Downs, and Lucia Aniello “for changing my life in every conceivable way, but not just by giving me a great gig, but by being my friends and being my family.” She also praised her costar and fellow winner Jean Smart, “who is like a sun, and I just get to stand in her warmth.”
What did she say earlier about Israel?
She went on to express that, as a queer Jewish American, she feels horrified by the large-scale killing of Palestinians in Gaza, angry that it is being funded by US tax dollars, and believes it should be common sense to oppose the murder of civilians.
Then she added, "I mourn for all of the Palestinian lives taken by the Israeli government, entire families and bloodlines destroyed," she said. "I also mourn deeply for the 1,200 Israelis killed by Hamas on October 7 and the ongoing suffering of the Israeli hostages."
A vocal pro-Palestine supporter, Einbinder was among the 3,900 industry figures who recently signed an open letter pledging not to collaborate with Israeli institutions and film companies they described as “implicated in genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people.”
