Halo: Combat Evolved remake coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2026

Microsoft confirmed Halo: Campaign Evolved, a full remake of the 2001 game Halo: Combat Evolved, following month of industry sp of industry speculation. The remake marks the franchise's debut on PlayStation 5 as part of Microsoft's expanded multiplatform strategy.

Halo Studios built the remake using Unreal Engine 5, delivering updated visuals across campaign levels and cinematics. The developer showcased gameplay from the seventh mission during the announcement. Level design includes modifications to enhance gameplay while preserving the original narrative and core experience.

The remake adds three missions that serve as prequel content to the main story. These additions feature new environments, characters, and enemy types, though Halo Studios has not disclosed specific plot details.

New weapons and gameplay mechanics added

Halo: Campaign Evolved incorporates nine weapons from later franchise entries, including the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, and Needle Rifle. The remake introduces vehicle hijacking mechanics and optional sprint functionality.

The game follows Master Chief after crash landing on the ringworld Halo, where he must help surviving humans combat Covenant forces. With AI companion Cortana, players uncover secrets about Halo while preventing galactic extinction.

Cooperative multiplayer modes confirmed for Halo remake

The remake excludes player-versus-player modes but supports cooperative play. Two-player split-screen functions on console platforms, while online co-op accommodates up to four players across all systems.

"At its heart, Halo is about connection, we're thrilled to meet a new generation of players on their platforms of choice to fall in love with Halo the same way we did. We're not trying to rewrite Halo's legacy – we're trying to immerse you in it like never before."
