Halloween safety alert: How to keep your kids safe from choking hazards, as per experts
With Halloween approaching soon, health experts are reminding families to prioritize safety amid all the enjoyment and sweets. Doctors cite that while trick-or-treating offers joy to children, it can also result in choking hazards particularly for young kids.

At the Yale Center for Healthcare Simulation on Tuesday, Dr. Seth Woolf illustrated the accurate response if a child starts to choke. He described that the Heimlich maneuver should be employed for kids over one year old. For infants under one, however, a different method is required.
“You should use five back blows, followed by chest thrusts placing your fingers just below the nipple line,” he stated.

Before beginning this process, Woolf highlighted that it’s important to call for help immediately, call 911 before performing any methods.

Training Can Be Life-Saving

Dr. Woolf mentioned that the abilities he teaches with simulated infants are easy to learn and can make a life-or-death impact. He encouraged parents to adopt certified safety courses provided by the American Heart Association or the Red Cross.
These classes are also available online, making it simple for caregivers to learn significant first aid methods from home.

“Choking can happen at any age. Most commonly, chocking deaths are in kids,” Woolf stated.

Choking Risks Among Young Children

As per the American Academy of Pediatrics, kids under five represent about 75 percent of choking deaths in the United States. To reduce this danger, Woolf recommends parents to cut food and candy into small, manageable portions.

He also cautioned that babies who have just begun crawling are mainly at risk.
“You really start to worry about it when your infants or babies start to become mobile around 6, 7 or 8-months-old, when they start to crawl. As we all know, they crawl around on the floor, they find stuff on the floor, they pick it up and whatever they have in their hand, it goes in their mouth,” he described.

Parents are advised to check under couches, between cushions, and in other places where tiny objects might be hiding. Anything within reach of a crawling baby could result in a choking hazard.

Trick-or-Treating Safety

Beyond choking prevention, Dr. Woolf highlighted that Halloween safety also involves ensuring children remain visible in the dark.
“You want to have bright costumes that have some reflective properties,” he cited. “Or if they don’t, you can put some reflective tape or striping along the costume to make them more seen.” He also recommended families to walk in groups, carry flashlights, and stay alert when crossing roads.
