David Oyelowo has returned to the screen, delving into his own grief after losing both parents for his latest film, "The After." The Golden Globe-nominated actor shares the emotional experience of portraying the lead character, Dayo, in this short film that explores an unexpected and devastating loss.

Expressing initial hesitation and fear about the role, Oyelowo describes feeling "very safe" under the direction of Misan Harriman, the film's director and co-writer. Harriman, recognized for his work as the first black male photographer to shoot Vogue's cover, provided a supportive environment for Oyelowo to explore his own grief and make the film cathartic.

The After depicts Dayo's life in shambles after a sudden and catastrophic loss, delving into the themes of grief and isolation. Oyelowo's own personal journey through loss, having lost his mother in 2017 and his father in 2020, added a layer of authenticity to his portrayal.

The film addresses the mental health crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, with Harriman emphasizing the ongoing impact on mental health. He aimed to create a film that reveals vulnerability without filters, encouraging viewers to see parts of their own grief and anxiety journeys.

Oyelowo, cautious not to exploit others' personal experiences, refrained from speaking with people about their grief directly. Instead, he researched grief through available resources and recognized the shared human experience beyond cultural and personal differences.

The After has been shortlisted for the Best Live Action Short category at the Oscars, marking a significant achievement for Harriman, especially given that it's his debut film. Oyelowo, who has previously been part of award-winning films like "Selma," acknowledges the impact of being shortlisted for the Oscars, highlighting the significance for Harriman's first film.

In addition to exploring the film, Oyelowo briefly commented on diversity in the film industry, emphasizing that the results speak for themselves. He hopes "The After" provides viewers with a sense of confronting and accepting challenges while ultimately landing in a place of hope.

The film is currently available to watch on Netflix.
