‘Hacks’ to end after season 5? Comedy series star Hannah Einbinder drops big update on Emmy Awards red carpet amid buzz; here’s what HBO said

Hannah Einbinder, the star of the HBO Max series ‘Hacks,’ has confirmed that the comedy series is set to conclude with its fifth season. She won the Emmy award for Supporting Actress in a comedy series on Sunday (September 14, 2025). This was her first Emmy award. According to news agency AP, she’s been nominated for all four seasons of “Hacks” along with her co-star and constant scene partner Jean Smart, but while Smart has won every year, Einbinder won the award on Sunday for the first time.

Speaking about the HBO Max series on the Primetime Emmy Awards red carpet, Einbinder, who plays Ava Daniels in the show, told E! host Heather McMahan, “It will feel different. She also said that the filming of the fifth season is set to begin next week, and when you know it's the last season, it gives a "bittersweet" feeling.

“We’re going to start [filming] next week, and knowing it’s the last season is really bittersweet. But I think it’s right, you know? It’s nice to do something as many times as it should be done. Not overstay your welcome. Rip it and do it and laugh and cry,” she said. HBO Max has, however, not given any update about the conclusion of the series.

Did the ‘Hacks’ makers drop a hint about the series’ conclusion earlier?

Jen Statsky, Lucia Aniello, and Paul W. Downs, the makers of the comedy series, have often been seen stating that they saw “Hacks” as a five-season show. According to reports, the fifth season of the show is expected to debut in 2026.

In an interview with Variety after the ‘Hacks’ Season 4 finale, the showrunners were asked about their plans in the run-up to the fifth season. “We are now breaking up Season 5, and we have to see how many episodes it will take us to get to where we know we’re going to go,” Downs said, according to Variety.

“The final scene of the final episode has been in our minds since 2015, and we’re excited to get there. But that may take more episodes than we can fit in the season. So the truth is that we don’t know,” he said. A spokesperson for HBO did not immediately respond to a request for comment by Variety. “Hacks” Seasons 1-4 are now streaming on HBO Max.
