In June, 2022, US President Joe Biden signed the first significant gun safety legislation to be voted in decades into law. Despite not succeeding in outlawing guns, the legislation contains financing for state crisis response programmes and school safety measures. In order to reduce gun crime, many states, including California, Delaware, and New York, have introduced new legislation that regulates ghost weapons and strengthens background check procedures.

Data gathered by the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit monitoring gun violence occurrences nationwide, shows that 2022 will rank as the second-highest year for mass shootings in the United States ever. By December 31 of 2022, there had been at least 647 mass shootings. The US saw 692 mass shootings in 2021, making it the worst year on record since the Gun Violence Database started keeping track of such incidents in 2014.

Federal legislation

The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was adopted by the House and Senate and was signed into law by President Biden on June 25.

Colorado

On March 30, Colorado Governor Jared Polis approved House Bill 22-1086, often known as The Vote Without Fear Act. Any polling place or central counting facility is prohibited by law from having openly carried firearms.

California

In terms of gun safety, California was named the best state in the union in 2021. According to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, it has the nation's strongest system for taking weapons away from persons who are declared ineligible to possess them.

Delaware

The measure to ban assault rifles, control high-capacity magazines, and tighten background checks was signed by Delaware Governor John Carney on June 30.

Illinois

JB Pritzker, the governor of Illinois, signed two legislation that deal with ghost weapons and secure storage of firearms. The governor approved HB 4383 on May 18. It forbids the sale and ownership of ghost weapons and mandates that all firearms be serialized so that law enforcement may more easily track them down.

New Jersey

On July 5, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed seven measures pertaining to firearm safety, six of which were a part of his Gun Safety 3.0 package that he presented to the state assembly in April 2021.
