'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' goes big at Box Office with additional $60.5 million, 'Book Club 2' struggles

It seems that Guardians of the Galaxy continues to shine like a pearl at the box office with an additional $60.5 million. Among most Marvel films, it’s safe to say that it has become one of the most promising movies to date.

Disney's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" continued its triumph at the domestic box office. The movie earned an additional $60.5 million during its second weekend of release. Despite a 49% decrease in ticket sales from its opening weekend, the film displayed an impressive hold, particularly for a superhero movie.

Among over 30 Marvel films, only "Black Panther" in 2018 (dropping 45%) and "Thor" in 2011 (dropping 47%) achieved stronger second-weekend performances.

In comparison, recent MCU movies like "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," and "Thor: Love and Thunder" experienced nearly 70% declines in their second weekends.

One of the reasons Disney is banking on the stability of the $250 million-budgeted "Guardians 3" is due to the upcoming summer blockbuster season. With "Fast X" set to release on May 19 and "The Little Mermaid" on May 26, the film must maintain its momentum.

Currently, the third and final chapter in the Marvel trilogy, helmed by James Gunn, has already amassed $213 million in North America and a global total of $528 million.

In other news from the domestic box office, audiences didn't stray far from the massive Knowhere headquarters. The picturesque Italian settings of "Book Club: The Next Chapter" in Rome, Venice, Tuscany, and other locations received fewer visitors than anticipated.

The sequel to the popular comedy targeting a septuagenarian audience debuted with $6.5 million from 3,507 theatres in North America, falling on the lower side of initial predictions.

"Book Club 2" has not received praise from the critics as well. Similarly, audiences were also not entirely charmed by the film, as indicated by its "B" CinemaScore rating.
