Groundhog Day 2026: Who is Punxsutawney Phil and what happens today?

After a brutally cold stretch signified by consecutive snowstorms, several Americans are turning their attention to a familiar winter tradition for a clue of hope. On Feb. 2, the nation’s most popular weather-forecasting rodents Punxsutawney Phil and Staten Island Chuck will once again step into the central theme to “predict” whether spring is closer or winter still has a grip on the country.

As Groundhog Day tradition goes, the guidelines are simple. If a groundhog departs its burrow and captures its shadow, winter is anticipated to linger for six more weeks. If no shadow appears, an early spring is stated to be on the way.

Punxsutawney Phil’s Early-Morning Ceremony

Punxsutawney Phil is the world’s most famous groundhog and the official weather predictor of Groundhog Day, appearing annually in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, since 1887. In Pennsylvania, celebrations start long before sunrise at Gobbler’s Knob, where the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club hosts its annual ceremony. Festivities begin as early as 3:00 a.m. EST, bringing crowds of dedicated fans and curious audiences alike.

Phil himself is set to emerge at sunrise, which will happen around 7:07 a.m. EST on Monday. Those unable to attend in person can still take part, as the event will be livestreamed on Visit Pennsylvania’s website beginning from around 6 a.m.

Staten Island Chuck Takes the Stage

New York City’s own groundhog celebrity, Staten Island Chuck, will offer his prediction from the Staten Island Zoo in West Brighton at almost 8 a.m., according to SI Live. Unlike previous years, this year’s ceremony will not be open to the public due to weather challenges. However, fans won’t miss out Chuck’s forecast will be streamed live on the zoo’s official Facebook page.

Accuracy: Chuck vs. Phil

When it's about forecasting credibility, Staten Island Chuck has an accurate edge. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that Chuck boasts an impressive 85% accuracy rate in forecasting the six-week outlook. Punxsutawney Phil, on the other hand, trails significantly, with NOAA data indicating a 35% accuracy rate. Notably, Phil’s prediction last year called for six extra weeks of winter.
