Punxsutawney Phil will be taking a look around, and in the case of him seeing his shadow, we can be expecting six more winter weeks, however, if he does not we will be witnessing spring a bit early.

The foremost Groundhog Day was celebrated on February 2, 1887, in Punxsutawney, Penn., as per History.com.

The tradition has its roots in the earliest Christian tradition of Candlemas when clergy would be blessed and give out candles that are required for the winter season. The candles represent the duration and the extent of the coldness of the winter.

Germans have put into the tradition the selection of an animal for helping to estimate the weather. However it was not the groundhog used till now, it was the hedgehog. After arriving in America, German colonizers in Pennsylvania carried on with the tradition, transitioning from hedgehogs to groundhogs, which were abundant in the state.

How frequently is Punxsutawney Phil correct?

While the predictions of the groundhog offer plenty of fun, however, they are seldom correct.

Punxsutawney Phil was right 39% of the time since the beginning of the tradition in 1887, as per the Stormfax Weather Almanac. Phil has witnessed his shadow more frequently than not, estimating a prolonged winter 107 times at 84%. USA Today has assembled all of the results since the year 1887.
