On Groundhog Day, which is celebrated every year on February 2, Pennsylvania’s most famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow on Thursday and predicted that it would be winter season for six more weeks. The groundhog saw its shadow as a deadly storm hit the South and the Northeast part of the country and geared up an Arctic blast.

On Thursday, people gathered at the traditional location to mark Groundhog Day, Gobbler’s Klob as the members of Punxsutawney Phil’s “inner circle” summoned the animal from his tree stump at dawn to see if it sees the shadow. According to them, the groundhog did.

The folklore is that if Punxsutawney Phil sees its shadow, there would be six more weeks of winter. However, if it does not, there is an early spring. As per reports, the “inner circle” of the groundhog are the members of the local community who are responsible for organising events marking the day. They are also the ones who feed and take care of Punxsutawney Phil.

The annual event in Punxsutawney is rooted in a German legend about a furry rodent. The community, which is 65 miles away from Pittsburgh, welcomed thousands of people for the 2023 festivities. The records, dating back to 1887, have stated that the groundhog has predicted winter over 100 times. The organisers said that they lost a decade, with no records. In 2022 and 2021, Phil predicted six more weeks of winter.
