People across the globe recognise Groundhog Day from the 1993 film in which a television weatherman finds himself living the same day repeatedly. The character is played by Bill Murray and he keeps reporting on the annual celebration again and again. This movie then puts Punxsutawney on the map.

It is reported that the town of Punxsutawney records thousands of tourists for the holiday but it further rose just the year after Groundhog Day was released. In the aftermath, in the towns where the movie was filmed, Punxsutawney and Woodstock host events for tourists.

Groundhog Day 2023: What is it and when is it celebrated?

In simpler words, Groundhog Day is an American tradition which sees the nation’s most renowned groundhog take a stance on the season that lies ahead. If the animal sees his shadow, he predicts that there would be six more weeks of the winter season. However, if the groundhog does not, it is believed as an indication that there would be an early spring.

Groundhog Day is marked on Thursday, February 2. While it is not a federal holiday, typically Americans are eager to see if the famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil catches his shadow every year on the same day. It is commonly celebrated with a range of events starting with the sunrise at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney.

Punxsutawney Groundhog Club also celebrates the day with talent shows, banquets and performances that lead up to and after the festivities.
