Grok bot users hit limits faster as Elon Musk warns of ‘unsustainably high’ AI agent costs: What happens next?
Musk addressed the issue on Sunday after users complained on X, formerly known as Twitter, that their weekly Grok Bot allowances were running out faster than expected. One user said their usage had reached 100% before the next reset, even though they usually did not hit their limit.
“The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue,” Musk wrote on X.
The comments have raised questions about the economics of running the AI agent, which can use a virtual computer to carry out tasks on behalf of users, including shopping. Launched by SpaceX in August, Grok Bot offers several subscription tiers, ranging from free access to plans costing $200 a month, with different usage limits that reset weekly.
Why Are Grok Bot Users Hitting Usage Limits Faster
The change has frustrated some users who say they are running out of their allowances sooner than they did previously. Musk attributed the problem to the cost of serving Grok Bot, but he did not provide figures showing how much the service costs to operate or how its revenue compares with those expenses.Musk also addressed whether users should pay more for higher usage. In a reply to one user, he questioned whether the cost increase for upgrading to a higher-usage plan was too high. In another response, he described reducing allowances and communicating the change to users as “just being sensible.”
The reaction on X included criticism from users who questioned the change. Benjamin De Kraker, a former xAI worker, challenged the apparent shift in the service's financial position.
“Two weeks ago Grok Bot was an incredible success story powering SpaceXai's revenue growth. Now it's unsustainable and loses money (???)” De Kraker wrote.
Other users criticised the change, with one describing it as “Yet another Elon rug-pull.”
The complaints come as SpaceX has promoted Grok Bot's rapid growth. SpaceX told investors last month that the service had 800,000 paid weekly users. Musk described it as the fastest-growing product he had ever seen and said it could eventually account for most of the company's superintelligence computing needs.

Is Grok Bot Struggling to Make Money
Musk's explanation points to a financial problem, the cost of providing Grok Bot has become too high relative to the revenue it generates. The issue highlights the challenge of balancing user demand with operating expenses.
Other companies developing AI agents face similar questions. Meta's Muse, another AI agent, has attracted more than 10 million users, according to Business Insider. However, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told investors last month that Muse was “very compute-intensive” and was not yet profitable.
Musk's comments about Grok Bot's costs have also drawn mockery because of his recent remarks suggesting that saving money could become “pointless” in an approaching age of AI abundance. The contrast has fuelled criticism from users who questioned why usage limits were tightening while Musk predicted a future of greater prosperity driven by AI.
Will Grok Bot Subscription Prices Increase
Musk hasn't announced a new subscription price structure in the comments about the usage limits. The change reported so far is that users are reaching their weekly allowances faster.Grok Bot already offers different tiers, from free access to plans costing $200 a month, with usage allowances varying by plan. SpaceX has also announced plans to include Grok Bot in a new $8 a month X subscription that bundles access to X Premium and Cursor, the AI coding platform acquired by the company earlier this year, as per the Business Insider report.
While some digital services, including Uber and Lyft, have also used introductory pricing or discounts to attract customers before raising prices later. However, there is no confirmed announcement that SpaceX plans to follow that approach with Grok Bot.
Users may face tighter limits, but Musk has not outlined whether the company will make further changes to its pricing or introduce other measures to control costs.
How Could Grok Bot's Costs Affect Its Future
Grok Bot's reported 800,000 paid weekly users suggest that the service has attracted a substantial paying audience. Musk's comments, however, indicate that user growth alone may not be enough to make it financially sustainable. The agent is also expected to draw on computing resources beyond those used by Grok. In October, Musk said it would use other AI models, including Claude Opus 5.5, MidJourney and Suno. That broader range of capabilities adds context to the questions surrounding the cost of running the service, although Musk has not provided figures linking those models to the current usage restrictions.
