Why groceries are getting more expensive USA

US shrinkflation 2026 at Walmart and Target: Americans are noticing a growing gap between what they pay at the checkout and what actually ends up in their shopping bags. Grocery bills are climbing, but in many cases, the products themselves are getting smaller at the same time. This practice, known as shrinkflation, is being seen across major retailers such as Walmart and Target, affecting items that families buy regularly, as per a report.

Shrinkflation in the US: Why Grocery Bills Keep Rising

Shrinkflation refers to the practice where companies reduce package sizes while increasing prices, often without making the change obvious. Instead of a clear price hike, consumers may simply receive less product for the same or higher cost, making the shift harder to immediately notice.

How Package-Size Reductions Add to Household Expenses

A recent study by InvestorsObserver found that the average family of four is now spending about $741 more per year compared to 2020 for the same groceries, as reported by The Sun. Out of that increase, $41 has been linked directly to package-size reductions, highlighting how smaller portions are contributing to rising household expenses.

Coca-Cola Smaller Packs and Rising Per-Ounce Costs

One example highlighted in the findings involves Coca-Cola, which introduced smaller packaging formats such as ten-packs of 7.05oz cans, as per The Sun report. These mini cans are being positioned as portion-controlled options, but data suggests they cost significantly more per ounce compared to larger bottles. A 2-liter bottle is priced at $2.79 in 2026, up from $1.89 in 2020, yet still remains a cheaper option per serving than smaller cans, as per The Sun report.

Doritos and Kellogg’s Join the Shrinking Product Trend

The trend is also visible in snack foods. Doritos saw a reduction in bag size, with a 15.5oz pack in 2022 shrinking to 14.4oz in 2023 while the price increased. Similarly, Kellogg's Frosted Flakes boxes dropped from 24oz in 2022 to 21.7oz in 2024, while prices continued to rise, as per The Sun report.

Why Shrinkflation Is Harder for Shoppers to Notice

Analysts note that shrinkflation is harder for consumers to detect than direct price increases. While price changes are visible, reductions in quantity are often subtle. This makes it easier for costs to rise without immediate awareness, especially in routine grocery purchases.

Sam Bourgi, senior analyst at InvestorsObserver, said that, “No one is surprised by growing prices these days, but the issue with shrinkflation is the silence around it,” adding, “You can clearly see when gas prices grow or rent rises - but in this case, you don’t notice when you start to overpay for less,” as quoted by The Sun.

Impact of Shrinkflation on Low-Income Families

Experts warn that the effect is more significant for lower-income families, where small increases in cost and reductions in quantity can have a greater impact on budgeting. Over time, these changes can reduce purchasing power and limit access to essential groceries.

Bourgi explained that, “It is a lot more difficult to notice changes in size than in price. However, shrinkflation can have an enormous effect on low-income households, where every dollar, every ounce, and every serving matters,” adding that, “This phenomenon can easily further limit their ability to afford groceries,” as quoted by The Sun.
