Greta Gerwig to write, direct two movies based on C. S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia under new Netflix deal; Details here

Following her portrayal of Margot Robbie in the recent Barbie film, Greta Gerwig is now preparing to delve into a distinct realm of enchantment and imagination, donning a different wardrobe for her next project.

Netflix has inked a contract with Greta Gerwig for her to both write and direct two films inspired by C. S. Lewis' beloved series, The Chronicles of Narnia. As revealed in a recent article in The New Yorker, Greta Gerwig is set to direct a minimum of two Narnia films for Netflix, contributing to the streaming platform's ambitious project of adapting the cherished Chronicles of Narnia series into a collection of movies and TV shows.

Following her portrayal of Margot Robbie in the recent Barbie film, Greta Gerwig is now preparing to delve into a distinct realm of enchantment and imagination, donning a different wardrobe for her next project.

In October 2018, Netflix made an announcement about their long-term agreement with the C.S. Lewis Company. They also appointed Matthew Aldrich, co-writer of Coco, as the "creative architect" responsible for overseeing the development of Narnia movies and shows. Mark Gordon, Douglas Gresham, and Vincent Sieber are named as executive producers for the movies and producers for the upcoming Narnia shows. The specific Narnia story that Netflix will adapt first has not been disclosed.

Over the years, the beloved fantasy series The Chronicles of Narnia has been adapted in various forms. It was first brought to life as an animated mini-series in 1979 and later as a series of movies, with the initial instalment being 2005's The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe directed by Andrew Adamson.

There were plans for a fourth movie titled The Silver Chair, with Joe Johnston attached as the director. However, in 2018, the production company Walden Media allowed its rights to The Chronicles of Narnia to expire. Netflix seized the opportunity and acquired the rights, taking the lead in this new adaptation endeavour.

Before delving into the enchanting world between the worlds of Narnia, Greta Gerwig will first gauge the response to her upcoming big-screen adaptation of the popular Barbie toy line. The release of the Barbie movie is scheduled for July 21, coinciding with Christopher Nolan's biopic Oppenheimer.
