Graham Linehan arrested at Heathrow over posts on X
Irish writer Graham Linehan, popular for creating Father Ted, Black Books, and The IT Crowd, was arrested at London’s Heathrow Airport on September 1, 2025, shortly following his return from the United States. Linehan was taken into custody for sharing three posts on X, in which he expressed his views on transgender issues. Upon arriving from Arizona, the 57-year-old said that five armed authorities detained him and told him the arrest was connected to the social media posts. He added that he was then led to a cell and questioned about the posts he made in April in regard to his views on confronting “a trans-identified male” in “a female-only space.”

The Metropolitan Police provided information about the officials involved: “The arrest was made by officers from the MPS Aviation Unit. It is routine for officers policing airports to carry firearms. These were not drawn or used at any point during the arrest,” in reaction to Linehan’s explanation of being confronted by five armed officers.

London’s Metropolitan Police did not confirm his identity but “On Monday, 1 September at 13:00 hours officers arrested a man at Heathrow Airport after he arrived on an inbound American Airlines flight. The man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of inciting violence. This is in relation to posts on X,” the Metropolitan Police told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement on Tuesday, which matches with the account of Linehan, later got confirmed by several media outlets.

Linehan’s account of the arrest

One tweet, according to Linehan, stated: “If a trans-identified male is in a female-only space, he is committing a violent, abusive act. Make a scene, call the cops and if all else fails, punch him in the balls.” The posts have ignited widespread attention and prompted debate over free speech and online harassment.

On Substack, Linehan mentioned his bail condition instructed him “not to go on Twitter” and that his arrest along with an initial interview with police officers were over X posts related to trans people.

“Later, during the interview itself, the tone shifted. The officer conducting it asked about each of the terrible tweets in turn, with the sort of earnest intensity usually reserved for discussing something serious like … oh, I dunno — crime? I explained that the ‘punch’ tweet was a serious point made with a joke. Men who enter women’s spaces ARE abusers and they need to be challenged every time,” Linehan said.

Legal charges and court appearance

Linehan is set to appear in court on Thursday, facing allegations of harassing a transgender woman and causing damage to her phone, which he denies. This case adds to Linehan’s ongoing controversies in regard to his outspoken criticism of aspects of the transgender rights movement. X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk publicly supported Linehan, stating the UK as a “police state” in reaction to the arrest.

Linehan mentioned that the stress of his arrest has resulted in a serious health incident. During questioning, he fell ill and was hospitalized after measuring his blood pressure. “The stress of being arrested for jokes was literally threatening my life! So I was escorted to A&E, where I write this now after spending about eight hours under observation.” he cited.
