Government Shutdown update 2026: How the next closure could be very different, and why Americans may feel it faster
The US government is just a few days away from another shutdown, creating fresh uncertainty across the country, according to Investopedia. The risk of a shutdown increased over the weekend after political tension grew following a fatal shooting in Minneapolis by federal agents during protests over immigration enforcement.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats will stop a government funding bill if it gives money to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). DHS controls agencies like border police and immigration officers. These agencies are very important in the immigration issue. Democrats say they are worried about how the government is enforcing immigration laws.

DHS funding fight

Republicans say funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is needed to protect the border and keep the government working. But Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said clearly that Democrats will not move the bill forward if DHS funding stays in it. If a shutdown happens, it would be the second shutdown in less than three months. This could again hurt the US economy. Federal workers may not get their pay on time, and many important government services could stop.

If Congress does not pass a funding bill by Friday, many government offices will be forced to shut down. A deal looks unlikely because the House of Representatives is on break and will return only on February 2, according to Investopedia. Betting markets are signaling serious concern about a shutdown. On Polymarket, the odds of a January shutdown jumped to 80% on Monday, up sharply from just 9% on Friday. Economists and market analysts are also preparing for a shutdown.

Experts expect partial shutdown

Brian Gardner, Chief Washington Policy Strategist at Stifel, said the situation changed quickly after the weekend events, as per CNBC interview cited by Investopedia. Gardner earlier thought the government would stay open, but now he says a partial shutdown is most likely. This shutdown would not be the same as the one in October and November.

Some big departments, like the Department of Agriculture and the Department of the Interior, would stay open because their money is already approved by both parties. But many other government offices that closed last time could close again. This includes the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which shares important data on jobs, prices, and the economy.

Economists at Wells Fargo Securities say the agencies that could shut down control about 90% of the government’s spending. Like before, a shutdown could badly hurt families and the economy. In the last shutdown, many services stopped and many government workers were sent home. The long 43-day shutdown in October and November also pushed unemployment up for a short time. That shutdown also likely slowed economic growth and delayed or distorted important economic data.
