Gordon Brown is mistaken in his perception of SNP

The report from his own commission into "the UK's future" is now available, and all that can be said is that the future isn't what it once was.

A New Britain is a prospectus that looks backwards, with its new constitutional arrangement primarily reinforcing the arrangement from the past. Gordon Brown contributed to the surprising collapse of that previous settlement; thus, it cannot be recognised as such.

Brown should only be approached for an apology given that he was one of the architects of Scottish devolution. At the time, New Labour promised the British people that a Scottish parliament would "strengthen the Union and eliminate the possibility of secession."

According to Brown's assessment, "the wisest course of action is to take into account all measures that are best to strengthen self-government within the United Kingdom without sacrificing the advantages that cooperation on matters that are common to us all can provide."

Keep in mind that devolution is referred to as "self-government," which implies a rejection of Westminster sovereignty and implies that, prior to parliamentary devolution in 1999, Scots were not in charge of their own government. In fact, because they are UK citizens and participated in UK elections for UK governments, Scots were already self-governing prior to devolution.

Additionally, the UK is demoted to a "cooperation." It is not a sovereign state in its own right, where some levels of local autonomy are allowed to promote effective or responsive governance, but rather a glorified credit union armed with nuclear weapons. Cash transfers and phrases given constitutional significance hold the UK Brown's paper envisions together. It is a nation with no shared identity and no hope for the future.

According to Brown, the UK's national self-government should be "entrenched" constitutionally. To make their individual parliaments and governments "a permanent part of the United Kingdom's constitutional structure," the Tories already modified the Scotland and Wales Acts. Brown feels that this is insufficient and that "strengthening the Sewel Convention and protecting it from amendment through the new second chamber" is necessary.

Giving Holyrood "more authority to promote Scotland across the world," including the ability to "represent Scotland as a nation" and "engage into agreements with international entities," is one of Brown's ideas. He uses Erasmus, the Nordic Council, and UNESCO as examples. Because allowing separatists to join a UN organisation and dress up as world leaders is how you support a UK that is under attack from them.

The third-wave devolutions of Brown share the same fault as the previous wave. Because they can achieve more inside their islands working in partnership than ever, they can achieve working on their own, it presupposes "the benefits of cooperation across Scottish, Welsh, and UK institutions." However, the SNP seeks to break away from UK institutions rather than working with them. It wants to rule its own independent nation instead of cooperating with other nations.
