What did Trump say about the accident?

President Trump shared the update while addressing House Republicans at the Kennedy Center. He offered well wishes and reassurance about the couple’s condition.

“I also want to send our best wishes to Congressman Jim Baird and his wife, who are recovering from a car accident,” Trump said. “They're going to be OK but they had a pretty bad accident. And we're praying that they get out of that hospital very quickly. He's going to be fine, she's going to be fine, but it was a bad accident.”

What do we know about Baird’s condition?

House Speaker Mike Johnson also addressed Baird’s hospitalization before Trump’s remarks, according to four people familiar with the closed-door meeting. Johnson reportedly said he believed Baird was dealing with a spinal issue.

Baird, who is 80, has not publicly commented, and CBS News has reached out to his office for further information. It remains unclear where the accident occurred or how severe the injuries are.

Why does this matter for House Republicans?

The news comes at a delicate time for House Republicans, who are already managing a narrow 218–213 majority. Trump also acknowledged the death of Republican Rep. Doug LaMalfa of California, who died at 65.

With LaMalfa’s passing and Baird’s hospitalization, Speaker Johnson’s margin could effectively shrink to just two votes in the coming weeks, complicating efforts to manage the chamber.

The situation also recalls past tragedies involving lawmakers, including the 2022 auto collision that killed Indiana Rep. Jackie Walorski, two congressional aides, and another driver.
