The Scooby Doo franchise is one of the most beloved animated franchises of all time, and Velma is an integral character. While the show has been very open about the sexuality of other characters, Velma’s sexual preference has always been a mystery.

However, as per media reports, the new Scooby Doo film, Trick or Treat Scooby Doo!, confirms that Velma is a lesbian. The Prime Video release on Wednesday showed Velma’s encounter with her crush, Coco Diablo, who’s also the villain in the movie. As the video started doing the rounds on the internet, fans started to celebrate Velma’s sexuality, though earlier creatives linked to the franchise had acknowledged the fact.

Google decided to pay tribute to Velma's coming out as a lesbian. Following the announcement, Google designed an animation based on the LGBTQ+ theme, which plays when a user enters the terms "Velma Dinkley," "Velma Scooby-Doo", "Velma," or "Dinkley" in the search bar. The animation is like fireworks of LGBTQ+ flags that burst all over the search result page.

James Gunn, the former writer of the Scooby Doo movies, revealed in 2020 that he wanted to make Velma come across as a lesbian. However, Gunn claimed the studio watered down his attempts every time, which is why her sexuality remained ambiguous, and she ended up having a boyfriend in one of the films.
