Google has rolled out voluntary buyouts to employees across multiple divisions in the United States, raising concerns about whether more layoffs could be on the horizon as part of cost-cutting, as per a report.

The “voluntary exit program” was offered to staff in several key areas, including Knowledge and Information (K&I), central engineering, marketing, research, and communications, according to CNBC. The K&I team with about 20,000 employees, underwent a reorganisation in October last year, after which Google executive Nick Fox took over to head the team, as per the report.

Message from Google's Leadership

Fox sent a memo to his staff on Tuesday, saying, “I want to be very clear: If you’re excited about your work, energized by the opportunity ahead, and performing well, I really (really!) hope you don’t take this! We have ambitious plans and tons to get done,” quoted CNBC. He then added that, “On the other hand, this VEP offers a supportive exit path for those of you who don’t feel aligned with our strategy, don’t feel energized by your work, or are having difficulty meeting the expectations of your role,” as quoted in the report.

Google's Restructuring Efforts

While, Google has not confirmed how many people were affected, the move comes amid continued restructuring efforts that began with mass layoffs in 2023, when 12,000 roles were cut, as per CNBC. The buyout program is currently only available to US-based employees and includes severance packages for those who opt in, according to the report.

Return to Office Push

In addition to the voluntary exits, some remote workers who live within 50 miles of a Google office are being called back in, part of a renewed push for hybrid work, as per CNBC.

Balancing Cost-Cutting and AI Ambitions in 2025

Google's latest buyout move comes after CFO Anat Ashkenazi had revealed in October that one of her key priorities would be to boost efforts for cost-cutting as Google expands its spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure in 2025, CNBC reported.

FAQs

What exactly is a “voluntary exit program”?
It’s an offer from Google allowing employees to leave the company on their own terms with a severance package, instead of facing layoffs.

Does this mean Google is planning more layoffs?
Not necessarily, but the buyouts suggest the company is looking to reduce costs and streamline teams, which could lead to further changes down the line.
