Has Google labelled US as a sensitive country along with China, Russia, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq? Here's the truth

Google has responded to claims that it had reclassified the United States as a sensitive country, ranking it alongside China and Russia.

NYT News Service
The US was reclassified as a "sensitive country" by Google's maps division along with China, Russia and other countries, CNBC report claimed citing internal documents of Alphabet's flagship company. However, Google has clarified that the term 'Sensitive' in its internal systems is commonly used for countries that feature different official names in "Google Maps".

Why did Google reclassify the U.S.?

"Sensitive is simply used in our internal systems for countries that see different official names in Maps (like a different name for a body of water) — that’s all there is to it," Google stated. "This is common & includes dozens of countries. Adding the U.S. & Mexico to that list means nothing more than that," the search-engine giant said.

This comes even as President Donald Trump announced that his administration would rename official maps and federal communications, which prompted the new classification for the United States. The Gulf of Mexico was renamed "Gulf of America," and Mount Denali was renamed Mount McKinley.

When the Trump administration updated its "official government sources," the company declared that it would rename the body of water between the Florida and Yucatan peninsulas as the "Gulf of America" on Google Maps.

As tech companies attempt to navigate the early days of a second Trump presidency, the decision to add the United States to its list of sensitive countries serves as an example of the difficulties they face. Amazon, TikTok, Meta, and other companies have changed their policies and products since the beginning of the year to conform to Trump's executive orders, policies, and political beliefs.

During his first term in office, Trump had a tense relationship with Silicon Valley, and during his 2024 campaign, he wasn't afraid to criticize the industry.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai and other tech executives have recently sought closer ties with Trump; several of them supported the president during his inauguration.

How do name changes affect Google Maps users?

Among the nations on Google's list of sensitive nations are Saudi Arabia, Iraq, China, Russia, and Israel. According to internal documents examined by CNBC, the designation is applied to nations with unique geometry or unique labelling.

However, Google's statement has made it clear that adding the US to that list does not amount to any significance.
