Google has refuted claims that it had issued a massive warning to 2.5 billion Gmail users after a SALESFORCE hack exposed sensitive account data to hackers. The California-based tech giant in its blog stated that Gmail's protections are 'strong' as well as 'effective', and claims of a major Gmail security warning are 'false'.

Google has reassured its users that Gmail’s protections are strong and effective. "Several inaccurate claims surfaced recently that incorrectly stated that we issued a broad warning to all Gmail users about a major Gmail security issue. This is entirely false," it said.

Google claimed that while it’s always the case that phishers are looking for ways to infiltrate inboxes, Gmail's robust protection mechanisms continue to block more than 99.9 per cent of phishing and malware attempts from reaching users.

Google has exhorted Gmail users to follow a secured pattern for selecting password as best practices for additional protection. Gmail encourages users to use a secure password alternative like Passkeys, and to follow these best practices to spot and report phishing attacks, Google said.

Earlier, several media outlets claimed that Google had sent urgent massive warning to 2.5 billion Gmail users after Salesforce hack exposes accounts to hackers. Millions of accounts were potentially at risk, making this one of the largest alerts in recent years.

The attacks mostly involved phishing scams—tricky emails designed to steal login information. Users were redirected to fake sign-in pages or tricked into revealing their two-factor authentication (2FA) codes, giving hackers full access to their accounts, those reports claimed.

Despite many users having strong passwords, only about one-third regularly update them, leaving countless accounts exposed, as per the reports.
