Internet search engine giant Google, whose parent company is Alphabet, is facing outages in several countries. The services offered by Google including one of the world's most popular email services Gmail, its video platform YouTube and even Google Maps are also down for a large number of users.

According to data shared by tracking website DownDetector, the most reported problems include the Google website (68%), search (21%) and Google Drive (11%). Another Internet watchdog organization NetBlocks also reported the outage.

"Multiple online services including Google Search and YouTube are currently experiencing international outages; incidents not related to country-level internet disruptions or filtering," NetBlocks posted on its website.

The major cities from where the Google outage is being reported include New York and Chicago in the United States of America. Users started reporting the outage at around 3:38 am Thursday, Eastern Time in the US. Many users in Eastern, South-Eastern Europe and Asia also expressed their frustration after Google went down.

Gmail is one of the most popular products from Google and there are over 2.5 billion users of the email service as of August 2025. The platform records an average of 66.64 billion monthly visits and its share of the worldwide email client market stands at 25.89%. Gmail users send over 121 billion emails every day with 90% of startups and over 60% of mid-sized companies in the United States having an account on the platform.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai had in late 2024 revealed that Google Maps is the “latest product to surpass the 2 billion user milestone.” Similarly YouTube has over 2.70 billion people using it every month.

Google in court

The outage comes just hours after Google was directed to pay $425million by a US federal court for invading and breaching users' privacy after the tech giant collected and stored data from millions of users even though they had explicitly turned off a tracking feature in their Google accounts. The case pertains to the data of nearly 100 million users. But Google's parent company is likely to appeal against the order.

There was some good news too for Google as a court also allowed it to retain control of its Chrome browser and Android mobile operating system. The shares of Alphabet rose nine percent after the court ruling.
