As Americans observe Good Friday and Easter Sunday, many often wonder why these major Christian celebrations are not listed among official US federal holidays. Despite their deep religious significance, neither day is recognized as a federal public holiday in the United States.

Good Friday and Easter Sunday continue to be among the most important dates for Christians across the United States, yet neither appears on the official federal holiday list. Holy Week remains one of the most sacred periods in the Christian calendar, but when it comes to the federal holiday schedule, these observances have never been officially included, as per a report by USA Today.

While millions mark the occasion through church services and family gatherings, the federal calendar follows a different standard. Here’s why these important religious days remain outside the official holiday list.

Why aren’t Good Friday and Easter federal holidays?

The main reason is that federal holidays in the US are generally more secular in nature. They are typically designed to honor American history, national identity, or significant civic milestones, as per a report by USA Today.

For example, Memorial Day recognizes members of the armed forces who died in service, while Independence Day commemorates the nation’s founding. According to the federal holiday framework, these days emphasize a part of American heritage rather than a specific religious observance.

That is why even widely celebrated religious events like Good Friday and Easter have never been designated as federal holidays.

What counts as a federal holiday?

A federal holiday is essentially a paid day off created by Congress for federal government employees. These holidays are officially recognized by the US government and apply across federal offices and agencies.

In 2026, federal employees receive 11 official holidays, with an extra day added during a presidential inauguration year. Even though Good Friday is not federally recognized, some states still observe it as a state holiday, meaning schools, banks, and local offices in certain places may close, as per a report by USA Today.
