Golden Globes are considered one of the most prestigious awards for both film and television. This year, the awards returned to television after a hiatus of over a year which was due to controversy regarding the lack of diversity among the organisers. Golden Globes 2023 took place on Tuesday, January 11, 2023, in California. Apart from being aired on NBC, the ceremony was available for live stream on Peacock. The awards were hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael.

While many are noting the winners in films and television categories for Golden Globes 2023, some might be wondering why Tom Cruise returned the awards he earned at previous ceremonies.

Why Tom Cruise gave back the Golden Globes he received in previous ceremonies?

Mission Impossible and Tom Gun Maverick star Tom Cruise decided to give back his previous Golden Globe Awards in response to the controversy that unfolded in 2021. At the time, Cruise returned three awards that he received in previous ceremonies after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the non-profit organisation which runs the awards, was accused of lacking diversity.

HFPA is a non-profit which donates money to charities related to entertainment and also organises the Golden Globe Awards. But, due to allegations surrounding the entire organisation, Tom Cruise returned his awards. HFPA was accused of a lack of diversity and several other ethical lapses.

Notably, even this year’s host, Jerrod referenced the now-unwanted Golden Globes in this year’s ceremony. He said, “Hey guys, backstage I found these. It’s the three Golden Globe awards Tom Cruise returned.”
