Talking to 'Entertainment Weekly', Actor Joseph Quinn said that people associated with the movie understood the weight of the project ahead as the shadow of the original film loomed over the set. He said, "We all were very aware of the legacy of the first film. So many people get misty-eyed about it." Recalling Connie Nielsen, who played Commodus's sister, Lucilla in the original film, Quinn said that her presence on set helped the young cast members. Quinn added that she came in “to show us how to behave in the Colosseum.” He added,"I was very nervous about it, and she was a very calming presence. She's a wonderful woman."
