Giorgia Meloni, far-right prime minister or a moderate politician?

The world's watching Italy with extreme interest as Giorgia Meloni is all set to become the country’s first female prime minister.

However, the interest is much more in the political ideology she adheres to than in a female becoming Italy’s premier.

Meloni’s political party, Brothers of Italy, has neo-fascist roots and is often regarded as the indirect successor of the Republican Fascist Party, which was led by Benito Mussolini. However, the new prime minister maintains that Brothers of Italy as a mainstream conservative party. A strong election campaign helped her garner 26% of votes, allowing her to overthrow the incumbent government via an alliance with other right-wing parties led by Matteo Salvini and Silvio Berlusconi.




Giorgia Meloni was a Counsellor of the Province of Rome between 1998-2002. She was also appointed as the Minister of Youth in the Berlusconi regime in 2008. Following her massive victory in the 2022 general elections, Meloni would be sworn in as the Premier Ministry of Italy on Saturday.

Meloni will be taking over from the incumbent government when the country finds itself amid an economic crisis, which could be further amplified if the energy crisis deepens. Confindustria has indicated that the stupendous rise of industrial energy costs from €8 billion to €100 billion has put thousands of businesses at risk.

Likewise, Meloni will also find it challenging to maintain a cordial relationship with the EU, who is closely monitoring the right-wing government’s movement. The EU fears a possible nationalist block along with Hungary and Poland, who’ve consistently criticized the EU’s democratic policies.
