Giant iceberg weighing 1 trillion tonnes and twice the size of Greater London has broken away; will it cause any harm? Here's what it could do

Latest reports have revealed that a huge iceberg which is probably the biggest and the largest iceberg of the world right now have eventually broken away after a long time and scientists are both happy and concerned.

The largest iceberg of the world named as A23a is once again on the move after being trapped in a vortex for several months, reported Metro.

According to Metro, the largest iceberg which measures approximately 3,800 square kilometers and is twice the size of Greater London termed as A23a broke free from Antarctica's Filchner Ice Shelf in the year 1986 but became lodged on the seafloor of the Weddell Sea for over three decades now.

In the year 2020, it began drifting towards the south but became stuck in a Taylor Column which is a phenomenon where rotating water traps objects in place, asserted Metro. The recent satellite observations confirm that A23a has now actually escaped this entrapment and is drifting towards the Southern Ocean.

Eminent Oceanographer Dr. Andrew Meijers from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) expressed his extreme excitement about the renewed movement of A23a and its potential impact on the local ecosystems, noted Metro. As it moves into the warmer waters specifically around the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia, numerous scientists expect A23a to melt and break into smaller icebergs.

Researchers who are aboard the RRS Sir David Attenborough are eventually studying how this iceberg influences marine life and carbon dynamics in the ocean. They have also collected water samples to analyze how A23a affects nutrient distribution and ecosystem productivity in previously less productive areas.
