According to New York Post, the lake vanished entirely around the year 1890, but heavy winter storms and snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada in the year 2023 caused it to return while overwhelming manmade drainage systems designed to divert water away from the area.

However, this return has raised concerns among local communities as the rising waters have submerged farmland and storage facilities containing harmful materials like fertilizers and electrical equipment, asserted New York Post.
The significant Tachi Yokut tribes, who originally inhabited the region and referred to the lake as ‘Pa’ashi’ were significantly impacted by its drainage while losing their land and resources, noted New York Post.
