In Germany, Archaeologists have discovered an octagonal sword from around 3,000 years ago at a burial site in Bavaria state. According to the statement from the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, the sword is deemed quite well preserved and it still gleams.

The discovery took place last week at a site in Donau-Ries. Researchers also believe that the nearly 3,000 years old sword was left in the grave as a burial gift. As per the statement, the sword is thought to have been dated to the end of the 14th century BCE, which is the Middle Bronze Age.

The Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments also noted that the sword, with an octagonal handle and made entirely from bronze is a “rare find”. Professor Mathias Pfeil, Head of the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments has also said that both the sword and the burial site still require to be examined so that the archaeologists can classify the excavated “more precisely”.


He continued by saying that the state of preservation of the recently-discovered sword is “exceptional” and added, “a find like thai is very rare”. According to the researchers, the sword was a real weapon. The statement revealed that the center of gravity in the front part of the blade “indicates that it was balanced mainly for slashing”.

Remarkably, the sword was left at the grave consisting of remains of three people including a man, a woman and a young individual. It is also known that all three of them were buried shortly after one another. While their relation is undetermined, they were buried with a rich variety of grave goods.
