This is exactly why an unexpected discovery in one of these rocks is attracting interest of researchers. Researchers described the formations as micro-burrows since they were not in alignment with geological processes that are well-known.
When rock is split under pressure, it forms irregular patterns. If water is able to erode stone, it creates uneven and rough areas. However, these tunnels had a smooth interior and uniformly in alignment. They were arranged in groups, keeping their direction and spacing and in a way that geology cannot understand.
In addition to this to the mystery, several channels had calcium carbonate with tiny chemical marks suggesting biological materials. In a paper that was published in 2010 in Nature Reviews Microbiology, researcher Geoffrey Michael Gadd explained how specific fungi and bacteria are capable of obtaining the nutrients directly from mineral. Instead of basing their work upon sunlight, they extract energy from the rock.
The reason is that the recently discovered tunnels stand out. The organized nature of their parallels is not in line with the usual patterns of endolithic activation.
A Possible Mechanism Beneath the Surface
To understand the unique nature of the structure, scientists are examining Chemotaxis' role. The process allows microorganisms respond to chemical signals, and often guide them towards nutrients.
An article from 2004 in The Annual Review of Microbiology by Wadhams and Armitage described how microbes respond to changes in chemical levels by coordinating their actions. For long time periods, this motion could theoretically result in uniform pathways inside rocks.
Although the idea may be feasible, it's not proven. The dimensions and the uniformity of the tunnels indicate an even more intricate explanation than scientists have already documented. In the present, the theory is being investigated cautiously, rather than being accepted as a fact.
