The Australian IVF giant confirmed the incident in a statement on its website on Wednesday, stating that a hacker had “accessed Genea data.”Genea collects highly sensitive patient health information, including medical, nursing, and scientific data. This also includes details about procedures and tests conducted at Genea or other medical facilities. However, it remains unclear whether any sensitive medical data was accessed or stolen.
On February 13, Genea informed customers through an Instagram post that its phone lines were down. The company confirmed the cyberattack shortly after.

How did the news of the cyberattack emerge?
Genea disclosed the incident after ABC reporters contacted the company regarding the breach, according to Australia’s national broadcaster, ABC.ABC reported that, following inquiries with Genea, it was revealed that the company had engaged Porter Novelli, a public relations firm that specialises in assisting companies during cyberattacks and data breaches.
Lauren Clancy, speaking on behalf of Genea through Porter Novelli, confirmed to TechCrunch that the company is urgently investigating the cybersecurity incident.

According to the ABC report, the company’s MyGenea app, which allows patients to track their cycle and view fertility data, has also been taken offline due to the incident.TechCrunch reported that the investigation is ongoing, and the company will notify affected individuals if it finds evidence that their personal information has been impacted, in accordance with its legal and regulatory obligations.
