English football & commentator Gary Neville recently accused Rishi Sunak’s government of “demonising rail workers, ambulance workers, and nurses” during the final coverage of the FIFA World Cup. Following the accusation, Tory MPs attacked the commentator for criticising the government's stance on strikes during a debate about workers’ rights in Qatar.

Senior Members of the conservative party, meanwhile, criticised the prominent Labour supporter for comparing workers' rights in Qatar with those in the UK, calling it "grotesque." Talking about Qatar's record on workers’ rights, the commentator, said, “It’s abhorrent and we should detest low pay. We should detest poor accommodation and poor working conditions. And that is something that we can never ever accept, in this region or in any region,” he added.

“And it is just worth mentioning that we’ve got a current government in our country who are demonising rail workers, ambulance workers and, terrifyingly, nurses,” he further added.

The former Manchester Star said that it was unfair for workers to receive an “absolute pittance” to help construct the World Cup stadia.

Given that Gary Neville worked for the ‘beIN’ Sports channel, which is controlled by a Qatari media group, the commentator was also accused of hypocrisy. Though the NHS, public sector, and transportation are all expected to continue their strikes over pay and conditions over the holiday season, many Twitter users appreciated the commentator for calling attention to workers' rights. Neville recently gave an interview to BBC's Have I Got News For You in which he defended his decision to travel on beIN, saying: "You've got a choice - my view has been, you can highlight the issues and challenges in these countries and speak out about them, or basically you don't say anything and don't go."
