Patrick was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in February 2023. As per the National Health Service, the condition “causes muscle weakness that gets worse over a few months or years.”

In December, Patrick and his wife launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to help cover the expense of a tracheostomy. However, he later decided not to move forward with the procedure due to logistical difficulties.


“I had confirmation from it would be around 6-12 months before I could get home due to lack of staffing resources,” he stated. “Thanks so much to everyone who helped push this – from senior social workers, to politicians, to the chief executive of the hospital. Everyone has tried so hard, but there just isn’t the staff.”

Doctors had reportedly given him about a year to live at the time of his diagnosis.

“I’m still overwhelmed by all your generosity,” he mentioned in a separatenote. “Anyway – still lots to live for and lots planned.”
