Nearly four years after the tragic death of Gabby Petito, her parents and stepparents continue to honor her memory in light of the release of Netflix's American Murder: Gabby Petito. This documentary, released on February 17, 2025, offers an in-depth look at Gabby’s life and the heartbreaking final days leading up to her death.

Gabby's story, which began as a YouTube journey with her fiancé Brian Laundrie, ended in devastation when her remains were found in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming in September 2021. Since then, her family has been grappling with grief, while striving to keep her memory alive.

Gabby's parents speak out about unresolved pain

In an interview with PEOPLE in June 2024, Joe Petito, Gabby's father, shared his feelings about the ongoing loss. He expressed that he does not believe in closure after the death of a child. “You’re never going to get closure over the loss of a child,” Joe said. “There will always be a hole in your heart that’s never going away.”

Gabby’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, echoed similar sentiments months later. Speaking to PEOPLE, she shared that they would "never feel like we have justice." She added, "It’s been three years now since the last time I heard her voice or seen her, and that’s really hard."

Fighting for justice: Lawsuits and settlements

Gabby's parents have not only been dealing with their grief but also fighting for justice. Since her tragic passing, they have filed several lawsuits. One of these was against the Moab police, accusing them of failing to protect Gabby during a traffic stop in August 2021. In body camera footage from the stop, Gabby appeared visibly upset, and the officers reportedly ignored potential signs of domestic violence.

In November 2022, Gabby’s family filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit, claiming that the police’s actions may have contributed to her death. Though the case was dismissed in November 2024, Gabby’s parents remain hopeful for future legal action.

Additionally, Nichole and Joe sued Brian Laundrie’s parents, Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, alleging that they knew about Gabby’s death and the location of her body. In February 2024, the families reached a settlement. Gabby’s family attorney mentioned that the settlement would help them "move on and continue to honor the legacy of our beautiful daughter, Gabby."

Despite the pain they have endured, Gabby’s parents and stepparents have found ways to support each other. Joe Petito shared that he, his wife Tara, Nichole, and her husband Jim have grown closer through their shared grief. This unity has provided them with strength as they continue to honor Gabby’s memory.
