A record 48 teams are set to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The tournament continues to take shape as more nations secure their places on football’s biggest stage. Cape Verde became the sixth African team to qualify - and a first-time participant in the World Cup. They join Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, and Tunisia among the confirmed African representatives.

In total, 43 nations will qualify through their respective continental tournaments, while two more spots will be decided in an intercontinental playoff involving six teams in March. The three host nations automatically advance to the group stage.

BREAKDOWN OF 2026 FIFA WORLD CUP BERTHS



Asia will send eight teams directly to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with one additional team earning a chance through the intercontinental playoff.

Africa will have nine direct qualifiers along with one playoff spot, while North and Central America and the Caribbean are allocated three direct berths - in addition to the three host nations - and two more playoff opportunities.

South America secures six automatic places and will send one more team to the intercontinental playoffs.

For the first time, Oceania is guaranteed one direct World Cup spot, which New Zealand clinched in March. New Caledonia will represent the region in the playoffs for a potential second berth.

Europe will contribute the largest contingent, with 16 teams assured of participation in the expanded tournament.
