From Treasury Secretary to Harvard exit: Who is Lawrence Summers and why he resigned

Lawrence H. Summers has been a well recognized personality in American economic policymaking and academia for decades. Over the course of his career, he served as U.S. Treasury Secretary and later became president of Harvard University. Known for his strong influence on fiscal policy and global economic debate, Summers established a reputation that influenced government service and higher education leadership.

At Harvard, he taught students, conducted research, and held senior administrative responsibilities, including co-directing the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Why Is Larry Summers Leaving Harvard?

Lawrence H Summers, a prominent economist at Harvard University and the institution’s former president, will step down from teaching at the end of the academic year, a university spokesman has confirmed. The decision follows after the disclosure of documents by the US Department of Justice comprehending a close connection between Summers and Jeffrey Epstein after Epstein had been convicted of prostitution that involved a minor. Summers remained on leave since November and will not make a return to teaching before his exit from the university. He has also resigned as co-director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government, according to the spokesman.

In a statement, Harvard spokesman Jason Newton stated the resignation arrives“in connection with the ongoing review by the University of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein that were recently released by the government.”

The university further mentioned:

“In connection with the ongoing review by the University of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein that were recently released by the government, Harvard Kennedy School Dean Jeremy Weinstein has accepted Professor Lawrence H. Summers’ resignation from his leadership position as co-director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government,” the university wrote in a statement.

A Harvard spokesperson confirmed Wednesday that Summers is stepping away from his academic and faculty positions at the conclusion of the school year. The former Treasury Secretary is also stepping down from his leadership roles at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Summers Reflects on His Decision

Summers explained his retirement as “the difficult decision.” He mentioned that he “will always be grateful to the thousands of students and colleagues I have been privileged to teach and work with since coming to Harvard as a graduate student 50 years ago.”

As president emeritus and a retired professor, he cited that he intends “engaging in research, analysis and commentary on a range of global economic issues.”
