It talks about her journey after her husband's death through thick and thin, love and loss. Her husband Saro Gullo lost a 10-year battle with leiomyosarcoma and passed away in 2012. Her husband was a chef in Italy's Sicily, and Locke was from Houston, Texas, and a Black actor. The two met in Florence by chance and shared a common language through cultural and food exchange. This show claimed the number-one spot on Netflix upon its premiere, with a watch time of 72 million hours in its first week.

The limited series adaptation stars Zoe Saldana and is inspired by Locke's memoir. Attica Locke co-created the show's contours in 2018 when Locke's book was going through editing. Attica found herself working at Hello Sunshine, Reese Witherspoon's production. Attica pitched the limited series to Netflix in 2019 spring, and Netflix purchased the beautiful love story. The executive producers and sisters talked about the importance of food in culture, grief portrayal on-screen, and how they navigated relationships and familial stories while filming and developing the show.
