From New York to Seattle: How Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook is archiving US history through local community groups

Community history groups serve as valuable archives, preserving rare photos and materials that may be hard to find elsewhere. Run by passionate volunteers, these groups play a major role in safeguarding local heritage.

Several people have used Facebook not just to connect with loved ones, but also to share pieces of local trivia and history.

In the US, various history groups have sprung up on Facebook collecting unique information about the country’s cities and towns. But Meta’s policies regarding content mean that on the Internet, nothing might last forever.

Rise of local history groups

The rise of local history groups or pages have given people a chance to reconnect with individuals they once knew, learn more about their area, and follow their passion for history. Be it New York City, Seattle, or a small town in Montana, social media has become an important tool for archiving local history by sharing photos and documents.

But community history groups have faced issues on Facebook when it comes to access and storing material, Fast Company reported. Be it cybersecurity issues or support from Mark Zuckerberg's Meta regarding archiving pages, moderators of history pages face a lot of barriers.

What problems do history groups face?

It is not easy to search or access material on the site easily. Attribution is another difficulty. Fake history groups have propped up, taking documents and photos without attribution to present false narratives.

On the other hand, permissions and copyright issues means that professional historians find it tough to archive or use material from Facebook. Meta’s vagueness about Facebook being a long-time historical repository has not helped matters.

Meta’s support policies have added to the issues, with reports claiming that paid services like Meta Verified cannot help in cases of hacking and impersonation.

Why are community history groups important?

They provide photos and other material that might not be easily available elsewhere. With dedicated volunteers, community history groups have become repositories of local knowledge and connections. They help supplement the work of local museums by establishing a more personal connection with the artifacts on display.

Hacking of history groups

Several incidents have been reported where pages and groups were hacked and their content altered. In March 2024, a local history Facebook group called Seattle Vintage was hacked. The page was taken over by malicious actors. There was no mechanism to complain to Meta. The group was able to restore their access to their pages only with the help of a Facebook employee.
