Friends actor Matthew Perry remembers he almost died due to drug overdose. Read to know

In the most recent issue of People magazine, Matthew Perry discussed his battle with opioids. The Friends’s actor recalled how he survived a life-threatening incident at the age of 49 due to drug overdose. He related how, after his colon burst due to an overdose, he spent two months in a coma and five months in the hospital to make a recovery.

The doctors then told him he had a 2% chance of survival.

The now 53-year-old actor is best-known for his role in the 1994 sitcom Friends, where he played the role of Chandler Bing. His upcoming memoir, where he talks about his struggle with addiction, is called "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing."


Perry told the magazine that doctors told his family that he "had a 2 per cent chance to live." He was put on an "extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine" that does "all the breathing" for his lungs and heart, he said.

His addiction to alcohol began in the 90s during the shooting of Friends. He said that at that time (aged 24), he could kind of "handle it" at that time. But by the age of 34, he was "entrenched in a lot of trouble," he further added.



He also said that he was completely sober around 2002 when filming for the last two seasons was ongoing. He was nominated for Best Actor in the same year.

He once took 55 Vicodin a day, Perry said, while recalling his lowest moments.
