Who was Albert Camus?

Albert Camus was born on November 7, 1913, in Mondovi, French Algeria, to a working-class family. His father, Lucien Camus, died during the First World War when Albert was still an infant, leaving his mother, Catherine, to raise him and his brother in Algiers.

Camus came from humble beginnings, but through his intelligence, he managed to secure positions that made him change his life. A teacher named Louis Germain discovered his intelligence and facilitated Camus’s entry into a scholarship program, which enabled him to continue with his studies.

He was educated in philosophy at the University of Algiers, but due to sickness, he could not fulfill his academic aspirations. He later became a journalist, a theatre practitioner, a writer and a political essayist.

His work was influenced by his experience in Algeria, journalism and his participation in the French Resistance in the Second World War. During the German occupation of France, Camus worked with the underground Resistance newspaper known as Combat. He rose to be its editor and an editorial writer.

Camus became renowned as a novelist and philosopher through his works like The Stranger, The Myth of Sisyphus, The Plague and The Rebel. He explored in his literature what he termed the absurd, the tension between humans’ need for order in a seemingly disorderly universe.

In 1957, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature at the age of 44. The Swedish Academy recognised him for literature that illuminated “the problems of the human conscience” in his time.

His life ended tragically just three years later. Camus died in a car accident in France on January 4, 1960, aged 46.
