Tennis stars participating in the French Open will be provided with a new tool aimed at reducing stress during the tournament. Organizers have announced the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to filter out abusive comments on popular social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.

This marks the first time such technology is being implemented at the tournament. The software, developed by Bodyguard.ai, has the capability to identify and remove racist, homophobic, and other forms of hate speech.

The French Tennis Federation will make this software available to all athletes participating in this year's French Open.

The initiative received praise from French Open director Amelie Mauresmo, who highlighted the positive impact it will have on players' mental well-being. By filtering out abusive comments, the software aims to provide players and their entourages with a sense of protection and allow them to focus on the game. The software will be integrated into Roland Garros' official social media platforms as well as the players' personal accounts.

Bodyguard.ai will provide daily reports to tournament officials regarding abusive comments and will alert organizers to online accounts engaging in abusive behavior. However, private messages will not be filtered by the AI software. The move to implement this technology comes as tennis players, including Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, and Nick Kyrgios, have spoken openly about their struggles with mental stress and anxiety.

The French Open, one of the clay-court Grand Slam tournaments, will take place from May 28 until June 11 at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France. The introduction of AI-based filtering is expected to contribute to a more positive and supportive online environment for the players during the competition.
