The late singer, a 13-time Grammy winner, passed away in May 1998 at the age of 82. The unexpected resurgence of "Jingle Bells" on the Hot 100 dated Dec. 23 is a testament to the enduring appeal of Sinatra's iconic voice and timeless recordings.
From December 8 to December 14, Sinatra's rendition of "Jingle Bells" experienced a significant surge in streams, witnessing a 19% increase and accumulating a total of 16.9 million U.S. streams. Additionally, the song garnered 15.3 million all-format radio audiences and sold 1,000 downloads during this period, according to data from Luminate as reported by Billboard.
Written by James Lord Pierpont and published in 1857, "Jingle Bells" has become a holiday staple, and Sinatra's interpretation continues to captivate audiences decades after its initial release.
Notably, Sinatra's chart-topping achievements extend beyond "Jingle Bells." His other notable entries in the Top 20 include "Strangers in the Night," which secured the top spot in 1966; "That’s Life," peaking at No. 4 in December 1966; and the duet "Somethin’ Stupid" with his daughter Nancy, maintaining the No. 1 position for four consecutive weeks starting in April 1967.
Sinatra's influence on the music industry began in October 1958 when he first appeared on the Hot 100. However, his connection with Billboard dates back to 1940 when he contributed vocals to Tommy Dorsey’s "I’ll Never Smile Again," reaching the No. 1 slot on the song sales chart.
