Four Americans cross borders to reach Mexico; Two dead, others back to US. Check details

Mexican authorities announced on Tuesday that two out of the four Americans who were abducted in a violent and audacious incident last week after crossing the border into Mexico have been discovered deceased, while the remaining two have been found alive.

According to Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal, one of the surviving U.S. citizens was found injured, while the other was unharmed. Tamaulipas state Attorney General Irving Barrios Mojica confirmed that both survivors have been sent back to the United States. It is uncertain if the corpses of the deceased have been repatriated yet.

According to the FBI, the Americans disappeared on Friday in Matamoros, a border city in Tamaulipas state, just south of Brownsville, Texas, after being caught in the crossfire between rival drug cartels. The attackers fired a hail of bullets at the group, who had crossed the border in a white minivan. Authorities have apprehended one suspect in connection with the incident.


The incident occurred when unknown assailants opened fire on the passengers in the minivan, leading to the four Americans being forced into a pickup truck and taken away from the scene by the attackers.



A witness who declined to reveal her identity to Associated Press for safety reasons reported seeing what looked like the shooting and abduction take place while driving in Matamoros. According to the witness, the white minivan was struck by another vehicle at an intersection, after which gunfire erupted. Subsequently, an SUV arrived, and several armed individuals disembarked.

The Biden administration is working with the Mexican government to obtain more information about the abduction, according to National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, who expressed condolences to those who lost their lives in the attack.

Kirby stated that the Justice Department is liaising with its Mexican equivalent to ensure that justice is served in this case, and that the US government's primary focus is currently on ensuring the safe return and wellbeing of its citizens who survived the ordeal.

Kirby also stated that assaults on American citizens are intolerable regardless of where they occur or the circumstances surrounding them.
