United States Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming has lost her Republican primary to Harriet Hageman, who was backed by former President Donald Trump.

Cheney was a fierce critic of Trump. She played a significant role in the probe into the Capitol riots on January 6 last year after Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election.

Hageman defeated Cheney where she bagged a win over the latter by more than 30 per cent points. Hageman secured this lead when over 90 per cent of the total votes were counted. Cheney accepted her defeat, which, according to her, is the will of the voters.

Hageman is a lawyer by profession and had no significant political backing until Trump endorsed her. On the other hand, Cheney is the daughter of an ex-vice president.

After conceding the defeat, Cheney told her supporters to continue their fight against Trump and those, who deny the result of the 2020 presidential election.

Hageman held a rally in Cheyenne after defeating Cheney. During the rally, she said that people were "fed up" with Liz Cheney and January 6 commission.

The defeat of Cheney has made it clear that primary voters are in the mood for retribution against those office-bearers, who aggressively and openly challenged Donald Trump.

Hageman's victory can be seen as a big win for Trump's campaign, which aims to oust all Republicans, who voted for his impeachment. Notably, only 2 of the 10 House Republicans, who voted in favour of the impeachment of Donald Trump in 2021, were able to secure a win and move forward towards the general election this year. Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski was able to secure a win in Alaska.

While congratulating Hageman, Donald Trump stated that her victory was a "wonderful result" for the United States. He also targetted Chinney and slammed her "sanctimonious" and "spiteful" words.
