Former Tesla executive criticises Donald Trump’s tariff plan

Rohan Patel criticised Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China, saying it could isolate the US from its allies in the long run.

A former high-ranking Tesla executive sharply criticised US President Donald Trump's decision to impose a 25 per cent levy on imports from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10 per cent on goods from China.

Rohan Patel, the former vice president of Global Public Policy and Business Development at Elon Musk-led Tesla, stated that lumping Mexico, Canada with China is not a good idea.

Highlighting the potential negative impact that the decision could have in the long run, Patel added that the US may isolate itself from its allies as a result of the tariffs, which are set to come into force on February 4.

Rohan Patel’s post on X

Patel said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), “This creates distrust that won’t soon be forgotten when the US needs help, needs partners or needs to win allies in a military and economic competition with China.”

He also pointed out that Trump had earlier referred to the USMCA as the best trade deal ever signed. But it seems he doesn't value his own statements or agreements and is likely to take credit for any concessions made by either country, Patel added in the post.

Patel went onto state in his post on X “Canada and Mexico were happy to negotiate in good faith, rather than staring down the barrel of a gun held by their longtime partner/ally.”
