Former NFL star and ex-Georgia running back Herschel Walker easily wins Republican primary for Senate in Georgia

Herschel Walker, a former Heisman Trophy winner, won Georgia's Republican Senate primary.

Walker defeated five Republicans in the election for lieutenant governor: Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black, resigned brigadier general Jon McColumn, project worker and Air Force veteran Kelvin King, and former state Rep. Josh Clark.

Walker is a newcomer to politics, but his reputation in Georgia dates back to his days as a high school football running back. After leading the University of Georgia football team to a national championship in 1980, he won the Heisman Trophy in 1982.


Former President Donald Trump supported Walker's campaign.

Walker's viability as a candidate was questioned due to transactions and a history of violence against women. Walker has spoken openly about his long battle with dysfunctional behaviour and homicidal tendencies.

Despite skipping debates with his Republican opponents and making other gaffes on the campaign trail, he won.

Walker and Republicans will try to reclaim the seat that Democratic U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock won last year, giving Democrats a legislative majority. On Tuesday, Warnock effectively won the Democratic primary.

Both major parties' first candidates for the U.S. Senate in Georgia are Black. The candidates and their supporters will be testing Warnock and Walker's overall political decision, since both voters and pundits want to see if African Americans will vote solely based on race or other factors such as political party affiliation.
