Former Chicago Blackhawks star Bobby Hull passes away at 84

Bobby Hull, a Hall of Fame winger and twice National Hockey League’s Most Valuable Player, passed away at the age of 84 on January 30, 2023. Former Chicago Blackhawks player also contributed to the team’s Stanley Cup in 1961.

The news of the former Chicago Blackhawks player’s death came into limelight after the Blackhawks and the NHL Alumni Association announced it via their social media handles on Twitter.

The Blackhawks paid tribute to Hull, stating that he provided numerous unforgettable moments for fans and was a beloved figure. He was a key player with 604 career goals, a franchise record that still stands. The team expressed their condolences to the Hull family.


As one of the greatest NHL forwards, Hull scored 610 goals over his 16-year career with the Blackhawks, Hartford, and Winnipeg. He was known as "The Golden Jet" for his speed and blond hair and also scored 303 goals during his time with the Jets in the World Hockey Association.

However, Hull had personal struggles, including a conviction for assaulting a police officer during a domestic dispute with his first wife and accusations of abuse from his second wife.

As per a Russian newspaper’s report in 1998, he made controversial remarks regarding Hitler, saying that the dictator “had some good ideas” which he later denied as false and defamatory.


Hull was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Blackhawks honored him by retiring his No. 9 jersey the same year. After a period of estrangement, he was named a Blackhawks ambassador in 2008 in a ceremony with former teammate Stan Mikita, and both have statues outside the United Center.

In February 2022, the franchise announced that Hull had retired from his official role with the team, stating it was a mutual decision.

Team owner Rocky Wirtz remembered Hull as one of the greatest Blackhawks players of all time and a beloved member of the team family in a statement.
